"Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat." - Coach Glassman
The above quote sums up the CrossFit community's approach to nutrition, and this philosophy is reflected in what is known as The Paleolithic Diet.
In a nutshell, the Paleolithic Diet, which is also commonly referred to as "The Caveman Diet" or, more simply, "Paleo," consists of food that appeared before the agricultural and technological revolution. More specifically, those who follow the Paleo Diet eat meals primarily consisting of meat, fish, shellfish, eggs, tree nuts, vegetables, roots, fruit, berries, mushrooms, etc. They consume natural, unprocessed foods rather than consuming a diet centered around grains, legumes/beans, dairy, soy, sugar and processed foods.
Here at CrossFit AMRAP we promote and advocate the Paleo Diet as a part of an active, healthy lfestyle. While we do not pretend or claim to be nutritionists, we stand behind the CrossFit approach to nutrition and believe in its benefits.
We also know that turning and maintaining a Paleo lifestyle can be difficult, especially with all the temptations we encounter on a daily basis. Ice cream, anyone? It is for these same reasons why our nutrition blog focuses primarily on providing links to support and help our members adjust to and maintain this lifestyle.
If you would like more basic, scientific information on the Paleo diet, there are a number of Internet and book sources available that provide sufficient information. Some of the texts that we have found useful and provide a good background on primal living include: Gary Taubes Good Calories, Bad Calories, Robb Wolf's Intermittent Fasting, Fitness and Paleolithic Nutrition, Mark Sisson's The Primal Blue Print and Mark's Daily Apple, and Sarah Fragoso's Everyday Paleo.
